What is Boxing?

Boxing is one of the world’s oldest and most respected combat sports, combining speed, power, endurance, and strategy. Two athletes face each other in a ring, aiming to outscore or outmaneuver their opponent using punches, footwork, and defensive techniques. Beyond physical strength, boxing demands discipline, mental toughness, and tactical intelligence, making it both a sport and an art form.

Olympic History

Boxing has been part of the Olympic Games since 1904 in St. Louis (men’s events). Women’s boxing was added much later, making its historic debut at the 2012 London Olympics, marking a milestone for gender equality in the sport. Today, both men’s and women’s boxing are contested across multiple weight classes at the Games.

Types of Boxing

  • Amateur (Olympic) Boxing: The style contested at the Olympic Games. It emphasizes speed, clean punches, and scoring points rather than knockouts, with shorter bouts and mandatory protective gear.
  • Professional Boxing: Longer matches with more rounds, focusing on endurance, power, and career titles.
  • Training & Fitness Boxing: Non-competitive forms designed for conditioning, strength, and skill development.
