What is Volleyball?

Volleyball is a fast-paced team sport that combines agility, power, and strategy. Played on a court divided by a net, two teams compete to send the ball over the net and ground it on the opponent’s side while preventing the same. Since its invention in 1895 by William G. Morgan, volleyball has grown into one of the most popular and widely played sports worldwide.

Olympic History

Volleyball made its Olympic debut at the 1964 Tokyo Games, with both men’s and women’s indoor volleyball introduced simultaneously. The sport’s popularity on the Olympic stage continued to rise, and in 1996 at the Atlanta Games, beach volleyball was officially added to the Olympic program for both men and women.

Types of Volleyball

  • Indoor Volleyball: Played with six players per side on a hard court.
  • Beach Volleyball: Played with two players per side on a sand court.
  • Other Formats: Recreational versions, such as grass volleyball and small-sided games, are popular across communities worldwide.
